SeaDataCloud Kickoff

From 28th to 30th of November 2016 the kickoff meeting of the Horizon2020 project SeaDataCloud took place in Riga. One focus of this project, involving 55 partners from 34 countries, is the further development of existing services and standards for research data from the SeaDataNet network, in which more than hundred oceanographic data centers have been organized.

EUDAT Collaborative Infrastructure

Together with 15 other European partners, the DKRZ has recently established the EUDAT Collaborative Infrastructure (EUDAT-CDI). The common goal of this partnership is to provide - independent of project funding - a long-term perspective for scientists and research networks for services and the management of research data.

Mistral on rank 34 of TOP500 list

The latest TOP500 list of the world's most powerful supercomputers was published on 14th November during the Supercomputing Conference (SC’16), which takes place in Salt Lake City / USA from 13th till 18th November. With a LINPACK performance of 3.01 PetaFLOPS, the final stage of the supercomputer Mistral at DKRZ is listed on rank 34 of the list and is currently the third most powerful HPC system in Germany.

The new coupling software YAC for Earth system models

The new, freely available software library YAC 1.2.0 (short for: Yet Another Coupler) has been developed by the German Climate Computing Center (DKRZ) and the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) to realize an efficient coupling of Earth system model components.

From 13th to 18th November 2016 Salt Lake City hosts the this year’s SC’16 conference – the largest event in the field of high performance computing (HPC) with more than 10,000 expected attendees. DKRZ presents itself and its services on booth 4518 as one of 350 exhibitors of the SC’16 exhibition that takes place parallel to the conference.

DKRZ long-term archive DSA-certified

During the last months, the long-term archive of DKRZ (DKRZ-LTA) went through a certification process according to the criteria of the "Data Seal of Approval" (DSA).

Mistral: Final expansion stage of the high-performance computer at DKRZ starts operation

On June 28th, 2016, company Atos/Bull handed over the second expansion stage of supercomputer Mistral to the German Climate Computing Center (DKRZ) in Hamburg. Since July 4th, 2016, the third „High-performance computing system for Earth system research“ (HLRE-3), with a peak performance of approximately 3.5 quadrillion numerical operations per second, has been available to the climate research community.

Cooperation Agreement between the DKRZ and JAMSTEC

The DKRZ and its Japanese counterpart, the Center for Earth Information Science and Technology (CEIST), that operates the Earth Simulator at JAMSTEC (Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology), have signed a cooperation agreement.

Mistral on rank 33 of the TOP500-list

The latest TOP500 list of supercomputers was released this morning (20th June) during the opening to the International Supercomputing Conference (ISC), which takes place in Frankfurt, Germany, from 19th to 23rd June 2016. With a peak performance of 3.14 PetaFLOPS, the final stage of DKRZ’ system Mistral is listed on rank 33. Within Germany it is at the moment the fifth largest HPC system.

DKRZ is one of the almost 150 exhibitors at the this year’s International Supercomputing Conference (ISC) from 19th to 23rd June 2015 iin Frankfurt. As one of the most important international events for HPC and as the greatest European HPC-exhibition, ISC brings together several HPC providers, universities and research institutes.

Interactive programming course for DKRZ

The research group "Scientific computing" at DKRZ has been supporting the university lectures about efficient programming for several years. Within the scope of Hamburg Open Online University the project “Interactive C-programming course” was initiated.

HLRE-3 phase 2 heralded

The delivery of the first 10 compute racks visually marked the start of the installation of HLRE-3 "Mistral's" second phase. Mistral's computing power and storage capacity will be more than doubled by the extensions installed during the next months.

Kick-off for PalMod: A national paleo climate modelling initiative

With the kick-off meeting on February 1./2. at the Hafencity University Hamburg, the PalMod project has started its ambitious goals to simulate a complete glacial cycle - from the last interglacial to the anthropocene. The PalMod project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Science (BMBF) to understand climate system dynamics and variability during the last glacial cycle.

DKRZ@SC15

This year’s Supercomputing Conference (SC15) will be held in Austin, USA, from 15th till 20th November, 2015, and will bring together more than 10,000 scientists, users, and stakeholders from the field of high performance computing (HPC). At its SC15 exhibition booth no. 2606, DKRZ will present its new HPC system “Mistral”, introduce the currently started EU project “Centre of Excellence - ESiWACE" and show climate simulations. On the latest TOP500 list of the largest supercomputer system, which is traditionally released at the SC conference, Mistral is on rank 64.

Senator for Science Fegebank visits KlimaCampus Hamburg

Katharina Fegebank, Senator for Science in Hamburg, Germany, visited the KlimaCampus Hamburg for a meet and greet. To get a better overview of the various scientific activities related to climate research and climate adaptation research in Hamburg, Fegebank met with the leaders of the institutes that form the KlimaCampus Hamburg at the German Climate Computing Center (DKRZ) on 10.19.2015.

ESiWACE and ESCAPE: integrating leading edge climate and weather simulations into Europe’s strategy for High Performance Computing (HPC).

DKRZ@ISC'15

DKRZ presents on its ISC'15 High Performance booth no. 550 its new high performance computer HLRE-3 (Hochleistungsrechnersystem für die Erdsystemforschung 3) consisting of the PetaFLOPS-System "Mistral" by Bull/Atos and a hierarchical storage management system (HSM) based on HPSS by IBM. During the ISC’15 the latest Top500 List of the most powerful high performance computer systems is released. The first configuration level of Mistral at DKRZ is on rank 56 of the list. In Germany it is the sixth-largest HPC system.

On April, 23rd , 2015 - the official Girls’Day - DKRZ welcomes two groups of 10 to 16 years old, female future scientists, who wants to get to know everything about the profession as a climate researcher.

EUDAT2020 - Unified Access to European Research Data

The project partners of EUDAT 2020, a project recently funded with 19 million Euros within the EU's Horizon2020 program, held a kick-off meeting in Helsinki from March 24th to March 26th, 2015. EUDAT 2020, started on March 1st, 2015, is a follow-up project to the FP7 project EUDAT, which initially started on October 1st, 2011.

New Supercomputer at DKRZ starts operation: Mistral

Mistral: like this wind, this new high performance computer comes from France. The French computer manufacturer Bull, an Atos company, installed the first phase of of this new system, which will replace DKRZ's IBM Power6 named Blizzard this summer. Blizzard has been serving climate research since 2009.

ESGF Achievement Award

On the occasion of the „Earth System Grid Federation and Ultrascale Visualization Climate Data Analysis Tools Conference”, which took place from December 9th-12th, 2014, at the PCMDI of the Lawrence Livermore National Lab, DKRZ staff member Torsten Rathmann received an “ESGF Outstanding Achievement Award 2014” for the unfailing support he delivered to the users of the Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF).

Probably more than 10,000 scientists, users, vendors and decision makers will attend this important international conference on high performance computing. At its booth (number 603) DKRZ, as one of more than 350 exhibitors, will give a preview on its forthcoming PetaFLOPS-supercomputer, will inform about its data services and will show visualizations of climate simulations.
