The consortia simulations, which are regularly carried out on our supercomputers with respect to the German contribution to the assessment reports of the IPCC, belong to the most affording simulation projects. Starting in 2004, approximately 25 % of our computational resources on HLRE1, our former supercomputer, had been used for more than a year until the complex model calculations were completed. The simulations were realized with the coupled atmosphere ocean model ECHAM5 / MPI-OM developed the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M).

Background

Simulations for IPCC AR4 (4. Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change)

Scenarios

Emission scenarios and temperature change

2m-Temperature

The projected 2m-temperature change shows large regional differences.

Precipitation

Caused by a warmer climate, other variables in the climate system are likely to change also. A prominent example: precipitation.

Sea Ice

The arctic sea ice cover seems to be vulnerable to climate changes.

Sea level

As a consequence of global warming, the oceans are also getting warmer. A consequence: sea level rise
