Invitation to the “Open User Exchange”
DKRZ, together with the DKRZ user group, cordially invites its users to the next Open User Exchange meeting (formerly known as the “Schneesturm” meeting) – the first public agenda item of the upcoming user group meeting. DKRZ and partners present Hamburg climate research at EGU25
From April 28 to May 2, 2025, the German Climate Computing Center (DKRZ), the Earth System Modelling Project Office (ESMO) – a core project of the World Climate Research Programme located at the DKRZ, the Center for Earth System Research and Sustainability (CEN) and CLICCS - the Cluster of Excellence at the University of Hamburg will provide insights into Hamburg's climate and Earth system research at the General Assembly of the European Geosciences Union (EGU) in Vienna.
DKRZ Python Course Continues Its Success Story
For the eighth time, the DKRZ team co-jointly with the Grpoup Scientific Computing, successfully held its popular Python course for geoscientists from March 31 to April 4, 2025.
Climate Science meets AI: Deep Learning Workshop
From March 19 to 21, 2025, the DKRZ in Hamburg once again hosted a workshop introducing deep learning with a focus on applications in climate science. The event was jointly organized by the “Machine Learning” group in the DKRZ department Data Analysis and the Helmholtz AI group at the Hereon Research Center.
CAP7: German contribution to the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project
The aim of CAP7 is to make a clearly visible national contribution to the project CMIP7. The CAP7 kick-off meeting was held at Deutscher Wetterdienst, Seewetteramt Hamburg, on 25-26 February 2025. Representatives from seven different organizations, including DKRZ, University of Hamburg, Alfred Wegener Institute and Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, came together to share progress on milestones and organize goals for the coming months.
DKRZ takes up operation of a third Spectra tape library
In February 2025, the DKRZ, together with Spectra, successfully completed the set-up and integration of a third Spectra Logic Tfinity magnetic tape library into DKRZ's archive system.

The climate research and infrastructure projects WarmWorld and ESiWACE3 invite master's and early doctoral students in computer science, data science, technomathematics, applied mathematics, as well as students of meteorology and climate science with programming skills and an interest in scientific computing to apply for participation in the hpc4climate summer school.
natESM Community Workshop 2025
The fifth natESM community workshop took place in Berlin on February 18 and 19, 2025. Over the course of two days, scientists and developers discussed the continued development of the natESM system and ways to strengthen collaboration within the community.
3rd ICG-EMO Workshop: Marine Ecosystem Modeling of the North Sea
From February 11 to 13, 2025, the third ICG-EMO workshop of the OSPAR Commission took place at the DKRZ in Hamburg.
Kick off for EU Projects EOSC EDEN and FIDELIS
From February 4 to 6, 2025, 30 European and international organizations, including the DKRZ, met in Helsinki for a kick-off meeting for the two EU projects EOSC EDEN and FIDELIS. These are intended to promote and harmonize digital data archiving and curation in Europe and, as well as to network their stakeholders and institutions.
Quantum Computing Meets Climate Modeling: Insights from the DKRZ Workshop
On February 6-7, 2025, DKRZ hosted a workshop titled "Quantum Computing in Computational Climatology." This event was organized in collaboration with industry leaders ParTec AG and ORCA Computing.
2nd EERIE General Assembly
From January 14th to 16th, 2025, the Federal Institute of Technology Zurich hosted 60 participants at the second in-person EERIE project grand assembly. The DKRZ was represented as a project partner and actively supported the event.
New EU project TerraDT: A digital twin of the Earth
On January 1, 2025, the EU-funded project TerraDT started, which aims to develop a high-resolution digital twin (DT) for components of the Earth system that are missing in the previous DT models: the cryosphere (frozen regions), the vegetation of the land surface and atmospheric aerosols are now also to be incorporated. The project is coordinated by the Finnish IT Center for Science (CSC) and brings together 18 leading European institutions and organizations, among them DKRZ.
News from the User Group Committee and the WLA
Both, the DKRZ User Group and the Scientific Steering Committee (WLA) elected new spokespersons and leaders during their meetings in November 2024.
SC`24: The HPC world gathers in Atlanta!
At the Supercomputing Conference 2024 (SC‘24), the world's most important HPC event, approximately 10,000 attendees gathered in Atlanta, USA, from November 17 to 22.
Nature publication: AI supports research about global ocean temperatures
A new study in the journal Nature shows that the oceans in the early 20th century (1900-1930) were less cold than previously thought. The findings of this study are confirmed by an AI method developed at the DKRZ.
ESiWACE3 celebrates its General Assembly in Hamburg
On November, 12 and 13, 2024, the DKRZ hosted the ESiWACE3 general assembly. The meeting with over 40 participants - 34 of them on site - marked the halfway point of the third funding period of this European center of excellence.
AI in Climate Research: Detecting Climate Extremes
Climate extremes such as heat waves, heavy rainfall or droughts have far-reaching impacts on ecosystems, agriculture, water resources and also on human health. In order to understand recent climate extremes and to be able to assess the resulting climate risks, they must be examined in a historical context. How do these recent extremes compare to past events throughout the 20th Century, and what are the regional variations of the long term trends? To answer this question, data analysts of DKRZ have developed a method that can effectively reconstruct incomplete observation data on climate extremes by using methods of artificial intelligence (AI). The results of the study were published in the internationally renowned journal “Nature Communications” at the end of October 2024.
WarmWorld General Assembly: Half time for the first project phase
From October, 16 to 16, 2024 the WarmWorld General Assembly took place at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research in Bremerhaven. The project WarmWorld is reaching its halfway milestone within Phase 1, so that the about 80 participants – among them several members of the DKRZ team were going through what already have been achieved during the first phase and what priorities should be set with regards to the application for phase 2.
Successful coding sprint of the CLINT project
As part of the project CLINT (short for: Climate Intelligence), a coding sprint took place from October 7 to 9, 2024 at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) in Bonn to integrate AI-based services developed so far in the project into the ECMWF infrastructure.
Python course for geosciences
For the 7th time, the Python online course for geosciences was offered by the DKRZ in cooperation with the Scientific Computing group from October 8th to 11th, 2024.
Extreme weather and climate management: expert exchange and educational weeks
From September 24th to 27th, 2024, experts met for the 14th Extreme Weather Congress which was followed by the German Climate Management Conference at HafenCity University Hamburg. In addition to scientific exchange, another goal of the event is to inform the general public about the current state of science on the topics of extreme weather and climate change. In addition to numerous lectures and discussions, the DKRZ, as one of several exhibitors, presented its climate globe.
Study shows: How climate adaptation can succeed
Today, on September 19, 2024, the Cluster of Excellence CLICCS at the University of Hamburg published the new study "Hamburg Climate Futures Outlook 2024". The CLICCS researchers analyze very different measures for adapting to climate change.
Earth system science and HPC: iCAS Symposium 2024
International experts from the fields of geosciences, data handling and supercomputing, among them a team from DKRZ, met from September 8th to 12th, 2024 in Stresa, Italy, for the international symposium "Computing in the Atmospheric Sciences" (iCAS) to discuss new developments in climate and earth system modeling in light of the changing supercomputer landscape.
Energy efficiency of HPC centers: US delegation visits DKRZ
The Federal Foreign Office, jointly with the Goethe-Institut, have invited a bipartisan delegation of legislators and energy committee chairs from various US states to Germany for an information tour “Energy Policy in Germany” in order to promote transatlantic exchange on energy policy.
ESiWACE3-WarmWorld summer school on the use of HPC for climate and weather applications
From 27th August to 2nd September 2024, 17 international students met with lecturers from the Finnish CSC, the University of Helsinki and DKRZ (Dr. Claudia Frauen and Dr. Florian Ziemen) to learn more about the use of high-performance computing for climate and weather applications during a week-long summer school supported and organized by the projects ESiWACE3 and WarmWorld.

The "DKRZ Yearbook 2022-2023" will be published in August 2024 and shows a cross-section of the work at the DKRZ.
Workshop on GPU programming on Levante brings scientists closer to the technology
On July 24, 2024, around 30 scientists from different institutions met for an interactive workshop at the DKRZ in Hamburg. During the one-day event, experts from Nvidia and the DKRZ shared their knowledge and experience in programming Nvidia GPUs on the DKRZ supercomputer Levante with the participants.
Review: natESM training focussing on ComIn and YAC interfaces
On July 17 and 18, 2024, the natESM support team organized a technical training in Hamburg in collaboration with speakers from the DKRZ, the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, the German Aerospace Center and the German Weather Service.
