With its kick-off on 14 September 2026, the four-year Horizon Europe project CLAIMA (Climate Artificial Intelligence Managed Access), led by the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI), has officially started. Together with European research institutions and other partners, the project aims to transition AI-based climate models and climate emulators from research into pre-operational use. During the kick-off, the joint working structures and an agile, sprint-based workflow for the various work packages were established. DKRZ is contributing in particular to the development of the data and infrastructure components required for this work.

DKRZ contributes expertise in data management and HPC infrastructure

High-quality, standardized, and sustainably usable data are a key prerequisite for the use of AI in climate research. Within CLAIMA, DKRZ will take responsibility for the essential data lifecycle: building robust data pipelines that harmonize heterogeneous input sources such as reanalyses, simulations, and observational datasets, while developing FAIR-compliant SpatioTemporal Asset Catalog (STAC) catalogs. These are intended to provide standardised, machine-readable access to the climate and environmental data used in the project, thereby improving the reusability of the data beyond individual applications and project phases.

Enabling AI for climate research and applications

Combining AI modeling, high-performance computing, and modern data management, CLAIMA creates new opportunities for the use of climate information. The technologies developed are intended to support applications in Earth system research, climate-resilient shipping, the planning of energy infrastructure, and the assessment of climate-related health risks.

The planned European AI platform is designed to run on European HPC and AI Factory infrastructures. The goal is to enable scalable and interoperable use of AI-based climate information and models across different research and application areas. In doing so, CLAIMA will also contribute to European initiatives such as Destination Earth.
