This year's biennial workshop was themed "Exploring the Past, Present, and Future of HPC in Meteorology." This highlighted the transformative impact powerful supercomputers have played in weather forecasting, climate modeling, and the assessment of extreme weather events – and how important they continue to be today. In addition to a review and current developments, participants also discussed the future of meteorological modeling, especially with regard to exascale computing, data-driven modeling, and sustainability aspects.
As part of the workshop program, Dr. Jan Frederik Engels from DKRZ gave a talk on "Mapping Earth System Components to Compute Architectures for Optimized Throughput, Hardware Utilization, and Energy Efficiency." He presented innovative approaches for efficiently mapping various components of the Earth system to modern computing architectures to maximize computing power, hardware utilization, and energy efficiency.
The recording of the talk is available online: Video recording.
