The book, conceptualized by Prof. Hans von Storch and contributed to by numerous scientists and companions, is dedicated to the key elements of Klaus Hasselmann's work and their significance for climate science, summarizing original articles and placing them in a contemporary context. Interviews and reflections paint a personal portrait of Hasselmann as an influential pioneer of his time and an extraordinary scientist. Hasselmann was founding director of DKRZ and the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) in Hamburg, both of which he led to become institutions with worldwide reputations.

Upon completion of the book, Klaus Hasselmann was nominated for the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physics.
