This part summarizes the scientific facts about the climate system and climate change, especially the climate of the past, present and future as well as the causes and the physical basis knowledge of climate change. Scientists of the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) and of DKRZ with the support of the BMBF have carried out numerous simulations with the new climate model MPI-ESM which is the German contribution to the data basis of the fifth IPCC Assessment Report.

This first part of the 5th IPCC Report will be supplemented with two more parts in the coming spring, addressing adaptation to potential impacts of climate change and its potential mitigation. A synthesis report of the three parts will be published in autumn 2014.

Further information:

  • Background information, summary for policy makers and the full report is available at the IPCC website.
  • Information about the simulations carried out at DKRZ with the MPI-ESM model, the scenarios, various visualizations of results, as well as data access are available at the  DKRZ website.
  • Detailed scientific information can be found at the website of the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology. Many of the scientists at MPI-M contributed to this IPCC assessment report.
