HAICU consists of a central unit at Helmholtz-Zentrum Munich and five local domain-specific units in other Helmholtz centres. Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht (HZG) and DKRZ have created the HAICU local unit AIM, short for “Artificial Intelligence innovates Earth System Analytics and Modelling”, in order to foster the wide application of new powerful ML algorithms for research challenges in Earth system sciences. A Young Investigator Group and a High Level Support Team will develop innovative AI and ML methods for Earth system analytics and modelling.

As part of initiating AIM activities, DKRZ and HZG/GERICS co-organized a workshop on February, 03 and 04, 2020, on the application of machine learning methods in the Earth system sciences. 50 participants from a diverse set of areas of Earth system sciences and computer sciences came together to foster a first exchange about challenges, methods and future activities. Speakers represented a wide range of institutions covering Max Planck institutes, the European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecast (ECMWF) and German and European universities.
In addition, the new ML research group at DKRZ has presented first research results. The workshop explored the application of the new methods particularly for model development and highlighted the challenges related to statistical uncertainties and technical implementation as part of the presentation programme and discussion groups.
