High Resolution ICON Ocean Simulation The ICON model consists of an atmospheric and an ocean component. These are the first results of a high resolution experiment using the ICON ocean component, with a horizontal resolution of 20km and a time interval of 15 minutes. Shown is the horizontal velocity at 100m depth using a logarithmic scale.

High Resolution Ocean Model In the context of the consortia project STORM, a global coupled high resolution Atmosphere-Ocean model is developed. The flow field of the ocean model component MPIOM shows distinct small-scale eddies.

Salinity and Velocity Also based on simulations with the STORM global ocean circulation model MPIOM TP6M, this visualization shows the distribution of salt and the velocity of ocean currents at 75 meters depth.

Regional Ocean Model: Mediterranean Sea The ocean model MPIOM developed at the Max-Planck-Institute for Meteorology is also used for regional modeling projects.

Plastic Waste in the Ocean Plastic waste is durable, particularly in ocean water. Simulations with the ocean model MPI-OM TP04 show that the plastic particles aggregate in few specific ocean regions: the garbage patches.
