ORCA Computing is recognized as a pioneering developer of full-stack photonic quantum computing systems, while ParTec AG specializes in cutting-edge high-performance computing (HPC) design. The workshop aimed to explore the intersection of quantum computing (QC) and computational climatology, bringing together climate modelers, HPC experts, QC system specialists, and computer scientists to discuss the future of QC in this field.
The climate science community is currently facing a significant challenge: the performance of new HPC systems is increasing at a slow pace, despite substantial financial investments. This raises the question of whether QC could serve as a possible solution and strategic necessity in the future. Earth system modeling has always operated at the limits of available computing resources, necessitating the exploration of new technologies.
During the workshop, participants engaged in discussions centered around several key topics. These included algorithmic advancements in QC compared to traditional HPC algorithms in computational climatology, the identification of potential use cases and algorithms in climate science that could benefit from QC, and the initial steps needed to develop and evaluate these use cases.
Additionally, the workshop aimed to raise awareness and foster the development of necessary skills while discussing potential partnerships with active groups in both HPC and computational climatology, as well as with quantum computing initiatives in the Hamburg and Munich area.
The lively discussions highlighted the potential of quantum technology to unlock new insights and improve the accuracy of climate models. Although the fields of quantum computing and climate modeling have yet to converge fully, this workshop raise the mutual awareness between the QC and climate modeling communities and may mark the beginning of a transformative journey in climate science. It represents the first step toward reimagining computational climatology through the lens of quantum potential.
The workshop was conducted by invitation only.
