The system, designed by Cristie Data, relies on StrongLink storage management from StrongBox Data Solutions and servers and "OceanStor" storage from Huawei. The existing 150 petabytes of climate model data at DKRZ will be transferred to the new HSM in March 2021. It will manage the existing 9 tape libraries with more than 79,000 slots and 90 LTO drives. Thanks to the scalability of the new HSM, data volumes of more than an Exabyte (1,000 Petabyte) can be stored and managed in the future; up to 120 Petabyte of new data can be archived annually. The use of the open standards LTFS and S3 improve future security and expand the possibilities for making data available between different institutions. The technically mature metadata management simplifies the retrieval of data based on automatically generated and user-defined metadata. The system will take up its operation in April 2021.
