Thirty international master's and doctoral students have come together for the hpc4climate 2025 Summer School, which takes place from July 28 to August 7, 2025, in Lauenburg, to deepen their knowledge of the interface between high-performance computing (HPC) and climate science. Supplemented by two invited keynote talks, the scientific program will be delivered to participants by an 11-member lecturer team, including five DKRZ employees.
This initiative is part of the BMFTR project WarmWorld, which is supported by the EuroHPC JU project ESiWACE3 and co-funded by the DKRZ and the Max Planck Society.
Before touring the computer rooms, the visit began with a presentation by Dr. Jan Frederik Engels on high-performance computing and energy efficiency, focusing on the DKRZ's current systems. After a detailed discussion, the group headed up to the “hallowed halls” where they were able to take a close look at the hardware of the Levante supercomputer, the storage system, and the data archive.
In addition to presenting the hardware, Dr. Florian Ziemen explained some of the history of the DKRZ in the showroom and demonstrated current climate simulations on the climate globe and a touch table.
