In a collaboration between the German Climate Computing Center (DKRZ) and the Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) in Potsdam, an intelligent AI assistant will be developed to support researchers in selecting, analyzing, and processing complex geoscientific data. The system builds on the prototype FrevaGPT, which has already undergone successful initial testing, and will now be further developed under the project name ChatGRT.
The goal is to significantly simplify technically demanding tasks—such as data aggregation, software configuration, or visualization. Instead of dealing with formats, tools, or programming languages, scientists will be able to interact directly with data sources and analytical tools like TensorFlow, CDO, or Python through a user-friendly, chat-based interface. The AI will translate complex research questions into understandable, re-usable scripts, provide directly usable results, and point to further scientific insights.
The ChatGRT project is running from May 1, 2025, to December 31, 2027. A kick-off meeting is scheduled for September 2025, following the onboarding of new team members at DKRZ and GFZ.
