This event series, which has been running for more than 30 years, aims to foster exchange between EU institutions and stakeholders from politics, business, the media, and civil society in Germany. This year's program focused on climate and sustainability.
DKRZ director Prof. Thomas Ludwig opened the 60-minute discussion, which was also attended by Dr. Christopher Kadow, head of the data services department, and Michael Böttinger, responsible for public relations and visualization, with an overview of DKRZ and its services for the climate research community.
The subsequent discussion focused on technical questions related to the energy consumption, energy efficiency, and waste heat generated by computing systems, as well as the increasingly slower growth in computing performance of new computer architectures. Other topics included opportunities for the use of artificial intelligence and the growing need to strengthen the resilience of the research community against politically motivated anti-science movements.
The visit was concluded with a tour to DKRZ’s high-performance computing system and data archive, as well as to the climate globe, where Michael Böttinger presented visualizations of CMIP6 results and more recent kilometer-scale simulations produced by DKRZ users.
