Copernicus is a program of the European Union to develop a European information service for Earth observation data. These services are based on data from satellites and in situ (airborne, ground-based, and sea-based) observation systems. Copernicus users include policy-making bodies that use Copernicus data and services to make decisions on environmental issues (e.g., climate change). All Copernicus Earth Observation Program data and services are openly and freely available to everyone.

C3S Climate is a sub-project of Copernicus with services on climate change. This service provides information on climate observations and climate predictions. It uses in situ and satellite observation data as well as analysis data from climate simulations. The service provides climate indicators (temperature rise, sea level rise) and climate indices (based on temperature and precipitation) for expected climate impacts. The Copernicus Climate Data Store (CDS) provides a portal and interfaces for interaction with external data and processing services. CP4CDS is a subsystem of ESGF (Earth System Grid Federation) to provide these services for climate prediction data to the Copernicus Climate Data Store.

In this process, ESGF data nodes are used to provide flexible data selection for climate data. For the processing service, a web processing service (OGC/WPS) is used to provide the analysis procedures as a service via a standardized web interface. The CP4CDS system is developed and operated by the partners CEDA (Centre for Environmental Data Analysis), IPSL (Institut Pierre Simon Laplace) and DKRZ (German Climate Compute Center). DKRZ is leading the development of the processing service with web processing services.
