Digital research data, as well as their accessibility and reusability, is assuming an increasingly central role for new scientific findings and innovations in research and society. With the establishment of the NFDI, the federal and state governments want to make research data more easily and more permanently usable for German and international science. In NFDI consortia, scientists at universities and research institutions will work closely with data centers, libraries and archives to develop joint solutions for the discipline-specific needs in research data management. Over the next ten years, around 85 million euros per year will be funded for this purpose.

It is a great success for DKRZ to be involved as a co-applicant in the NFDI4Earth consortium. The NFDI4Earth consortium is an essential component of the NFDI and brings together the leading national institutions in Earth system sciences. This includes more than 50 institutions, such as the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (Bremerhaven), the Helmholtz Center Hereon (Geesthacht), the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry (Jena), and the University of Hamburg. NFDI4Earth is coordinated by the TU Dresden with Hannes Thiemann, head of the Data Management Department at DKRZ, as one of the co-spokespersons.
