New magnetic cartridges for DKRZ’s archive

The magnetic tape of theses new LTO-7 cartridges is produced on the basis of barium ferrite. LTO7 cartidges have 3584 tracks and offer an uncompressed storage capacity of nine Terabytes.

At the same time, around 2,900 cartridges of the old LTO-4 generation, each with a capacity of 800 Gigabytes, had become obsolete and were removed. In total, the data archive system at the DKRZ manges more than 77,000 slots plus an additional 10,000 slots in Garching. At the moment, around 150 Petabytes of climate model data are stored in the archive, spread over almost 44 million files.
