In the course of three years, scientists will co-jointly port the German ICON model onto the Chinese high-performance computer TaihuLight in order to simulate with a global model with a convection-resolving resolution how a Monsun in 2070 might develop compared to today.

The work should profit from the experience and the code base of a simular project, in which ICON has been ported to the supercomputer Piz Daint at the CSCS in Switzerland using so-called OpenACC directives. Like Piz Daint, TaihuLight has a heterogeneous architecture. In contrast to Piz Daint, which is equipped with GPU accelerators, TaihuLight has special multi-core processors, for which at some parts different strategies in the instrumentation of the code are necessary.
