The report emphasizes that sustainable adaptation to the risks associated with climate change is crucial for long-term success and shows that new adaptation strategies must be developed urgently. In all nine case study regions - Nepal, Namibia, Lower Saxony, Sao Paulo, Ho Chi Minh City, Hamburg, North Friesland, Taiwan, Maldives - can currently be regarded as exemplifying a sustainable adaptation strategy. However, Hamburg, North Frisia, and Ho Chi Minh City show first promising approaches to transformative adaptation.
The study also shows that the combination of climate change and natural climate variability is already severely affecting ecosystems as well as economy and poses greater risks for the future.
The conclusion of this year's report: Successful climate adaptation must be thought of in the long term, developed with the local population and aligned with sustainability goals. At the same time, efforts must be increased to reduce climate-damaging emissions.

The “Hamburg Climate Futures Outlook” is published annually. It analyses physical and social dynamics and examines which climate futures are not only possible but also plausible.
The Cluster of Excellence “Climate, Climate Change and Society” (CLICCS) at the University of Hamburg is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). It is located at the Center for Earth System Research and Sustainability (CEN) at the University of Hamburg and works closely with eleven partner institutes, including the German Climate Computing Center, the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology and the Helmholtz Center Hereon.
