COPDESS is a network of publishers and data centers in the field of the publication of data in earth and space sciences. Since the network’s foundation in October 2014, the COPDESS partners have been committed to ensuring that the citation of data sets and software used in scientific publications is as natural and binding as it is for quoted scientific literature references.
Important guidelines for the implementation of the data publication follow the Joint Statement of Data Citation Principles of the Data Citation Synthesis Group as well as the FAIR data principles coordinated by the American Geophysical Union (AGU). FAIR stands for findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable. For example, citing the data requires long-term, unambiguous referencing of the data. This is possible using persistent identifiers - such as Digital Object Identifiers (DOI), which DKRZ has been registering for about 10 years as part of its data publishing services. Furthermore, the guidelines also specify access and verification of the data.
