The German Climate Computing Centre (DKRZ) is the central simulation and data processing facility for the German climate and Earth System modelling community and is one of the leading facilities in this area. DKRZ not only operates supercomputers in the highest performance class and one of the largest data and archive systems worldwide, we also participate in many national and international projects aiming to improve the software and infrastructure for climate modelling.

Currently, we are offering a position as

Research Software Engineer - HPC (all genders)

Your tasks

In the continuously and rapidly changing world of High Performance Computing, the adaptation of scientific software is a permanent challenge. As a colleague in the DKRZ team, you will work directly on the largest HPC systems in the world and support our users in the further development of modern climate models. This includes testing and adapting to new programming models and standards (e.g. for GPU systems) but also proactively improving model runtimes and helping with debugging. Finally, challenging tasks in software engineering, such as the efficient coupling of different model components, are also covered and offer the possibility of actively designing scientific software.

Qualifications / Experiences

  • An academic degree in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Computational Physics or Engineering or related fields with strong relation to scientific computing
  • Experience and a strong interest in different areas of High Performance Computing, such as
    • MPI/OpenMP parallelisation
    • Programming for GPUs
    • Environments for and operation of high scaling applications
  • Proficiency in programming or modern software engineering skills like
    • C/C++ and/or Fortran
    • Fluent handling of UNIX/LINUX shell scripting languages
    • Complex software development and software version control systems (preferably Git)
  • Desirable skills in the application of computational fluid dynamics or weather & climate modelling
  • English is often our working language, so proficiency is a pro

Employment conditions

We offer work in interdisciplinary teams and excellent connections to national and international research networks. In addition to specific implementation requests, your tasks are also characterised by freedom, which you need to bridge the difficult gap between theoretical computer science and scientific application software development.
