CMIP6 (Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6)

In view of the sixth climate assessment report IPCC AR6 of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), which is scheduled to be adopted in autumn 2021, the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) has initiated the sixth phase of an extensive global research project that comprises performing coordinated simulations with coupled earth system- and climate models. Approximately 27 institutions worldwide and 32 to 38 different models or model configurations (scenario-dependent) contribute to ScenarioMIP, a scenario sub-project of CMIP6. (Tebaldi et al. 2021, Earth Syst. Dynam., 12, 253–293, 2021, The simulations for Germany’s contribution were partly carried out by DKRZ and for the most part computed on DKRZ’s supercomputer Mistral.

The SSP Scenarios The SSP scenarios: A new set of climate scenarios, the so-called SSP scenarios (Shared Socioeconomic Pathways), has been developed in view of the 6th world climate assessment report. The new SSP scenarios have been improved in a variety of ways compared to the previously used RCP scenarios. Read more ...
