In the project M-VRE (Virtual Research Environment for MOSAiC), DKRZ, together with the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) and the German Aerospace Center (DLR), is building a virtual research environment for the research data collected in the course of the Arctic expedition MOSAiC. This online environment will enable researchers to analyze the extensive and diverse data directly from their browsers and to benefit from the powerful hardware resources of the data centers. In this way, large amounts of data can be analyzed without each researcher having to download all the data and install the analysis programs themselves.
DKRZ's main focus is on the server environment. This is set up by using the Docker containerization technology and the Kubernetes orchestration software in such a way that the individual analysis tools can run independently of the operating system in a wide variety of environments. It is also easier and more efficient to adapt the resources to the respective requirements.
