The week-long event focused on the ICON model developed by DWD/MPI-M, the chemistry model ICON-ART, the community programming interface ComIn, and the model coupler YAC developed at DKRZ. Technical presentations on topics such as physical processes in the atmosphere, radiation, and microphysics were supplemented by interactive exercises that deepened the participants' theoretical knowledge in a practical way. Around 35 scientists, students and PhD-students from various institutes worldwide took advantage of the opportunity to receive training in working with ICON.
The central goal of the natESM project led by the DKRZ is to offer support to the German Earth system modeling community in the field of research software engineering in order to prepare and optimize models and other software used in simulation-based climate research in Germany for efficient use on future supercomputers.
