The first four ranks remained unchanged compared to the June list: The Japanese supercomputer Fugaku at the Riken Research Institute, with more than 442 PetaFLOPS, tops the list ahead of the two US systems Summit of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Sierra system of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. As the most powerful German system, the Jülich Supercomputing Center catapulted itself to rank seven on the TOP500 with its JUWELS booster supercomputer provided by Atos / Bull. Germany contributes to the list with a total of 19 HPC systems. After more than five years of successful and reliable computing, Mistral is on rank 110 and is still the eleventh most powerful HPC system in Germany.

de-Keynote_BjornStevens.pngAs the largest and most important international platform for HPC SC20 offers a comprehensive program on the fields of HPC, networking, storage and analysis - from software and hardware developments to applications and research. On November 16, Prof. Bjorn Stevens, Director at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg, presented in his keynote speech  „From Deep Thoughts to (Destination) Earth: Climate Science in the Age of Exascale“ how climate modelling will evolve using with exascale systems. The keynote is available on YouTube: here.

For the session „Scientific Visualization & Data Analytics Showcase Poster Display” on November 17, the DKRZ visualization team co-jointly with climate researchers submitted the presentation “DYAMOND++: A High Resolution Climate Model Setup”. This short film describes the development of DYAMOND++, starting with the low resolution climate models used in the past, to high resolution regional setups to study clouds and cloud building processes in greater detail. We interviewed some of the scientific minds behind the DYAMOND++ project, and show visualization examples of their work. The visualizations illustrate the progress made with this new generation of storm-resolving models.
