With the initial publication of the ICON code under a free open-source license, the development of interfaces for the interoperability and flexibility of the code was simultaneously given significant priority. The goal is to make the code more usable and accessible to the research community. However, it is essential that structures and knowledge about code design and development are first created and consolidated in order to enable new external developments that reflect the current state of the art in software development. This project therefore addresses the following conceptual and technological challenges in order to establish and ensure active, scalable, and secure code development.
* Code quality and maintainability
* Involvement of the research community, training, and governance
* Sustainability and financing of research software engineering aspects
