EOSC EDEN: Enhancing Digital preservation strategies at European and National level

EOSC EDEN will create a framework to determine which data are suitable for long-term archiving based on their use, quality for re-use, and benefit for science and society. In addition, the project will develop a model for the re-evaluation of data and test its applicability in partner communities across different scientific disciplines. In addition, tools and services for the automation of archiving processes will be developed and evaluated. DKRZ is involved in EOSC EDEN as an expert in the archiving of climate data and will in particular lead the development of a support kit with training materials for various scientific disciplines and data types on the topic of digital long-term archiving.

FIDELIS: The Network for Trustworthy Repositories

The aim of the FIDELIS project is to harmonize the definitions of trustworthiness of digital repositories in the context of the EOSC (European Open Science Cloud). On the other hand, a framework for repositories will be created so that they can support each other in becoming and remaining trustworthy and FAIR in the long term. FIDELIS will establish a European network of trusted digital repositories that will continue to exist after the project is completed and represent the interests of its member repositories in important matters (e.g. policy and funding). DKRZ supports FIDELIS with its expertise as operator of a CoreTrustSeal-certified repository and digital long-term archive and represents the climate data community in the project.

A strong partnership

EOSC EDEN and FIDELIS will complement each other. They will support each other in the collection of user requirements and advance the development of a European federated infrastructure for digital archiving, curation and data access in Europe. Their engagement with repositories, archives and expert data curators will strengthen the necessary expertise in Europe and contribute to the establishment and further development of a European network of FAIR-enabled trustworthy digital repositories (FIDELIS Network).

Both projects are coordinated by the Finish IT Center for Science (CSC) and will run from 1 January 2025 to 31 December 2027. The collaboration is supported by six partners - DANS (Data Archiving and Network Service), UiT (The Arctic University of Norway), UESSEX (University of Essex), DKRZ, University of Bremen, SIB (Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics) - which are involved in both projects alongside the CSC.
