A central focus was the C++/Kokkos rewrite of ICON within the WarmWorld project, aimed at preparing the model for future high-performance computing architectures. Complementing this, DKRZ colleagues presented work on optimising ICON’s MPI communication interface and introducing a single-precision implementation, both contributing to improved computational efficiency. Additionally, new streamlined output options were discussed, designed to enhance usability and data throughput in large-scale simulations.

Half a day of the meeting was dedicated to testing, continuous integration (CI), and workflow innovations for ICON’s gatekeeping processes. These discussions laid the foundation for a two-day workshop on Open Development for ICON, exploring how collaborative, transparent development practices can shape the model’s future evolution.

Through these contributions, DKRZ reaffirmed its commitment to enabling next-generation climate modelling and fostering open, efficient development within the ICON community.
