The gathering brought together members of WarmWorld Faster, along with colleagues from WarmWorld Better and Easier as well as partner projects EXCLAIM and OpenICON, to reflect on three years of continuous development toward an future-proof, community-friendly Earth-system modelling framework.

During the meeting, the Faster team presented recent technical developments, discussed strategies for interoperability and code porting, coordinated with the other WarmWorld modules and partner projects, and outlined the roadmap for 2025–2026 and beyond. For DKRZ, the event offered a valuable opportunity to share updates on our contributions to the module, including progress in performance engineering, software infrastructure, and support for high-resolution model workflows, while also helping to align priorities across the entire WarmWorld initiative.

Launched in September 2022 as the first of WarmWorld’s four modules — Faster, Better, Easier, and Smarter — Faster has since been systematically refactoring ICON, modularising key components, improving portability, enabling language interoperability, and preparing the model for exascale supercomputers. These sustained efforts recently culminated in international recognition with the ICON team receiving the Gordon Bell Prize for Climate Modelling, an achievement strongly supported by DKRZ’s expertise in high-performance computing.
