The three-day workshop combined theoretical knowledge with hands-on exercises and was aimed at PhD students, graduate students, and postdocs in the field of climate science. The DKRZ team not only delivered the talks but also provided the necessary software environment via JupyterHub, enabling participants to program interactively on the GPUs of the DKRZ supercomputer Levante. This allowed the theoretical concepts to be applied directly in practice — an approach that was very well received by the participants.
The goal of the workshop was to provide a solid understanding of deep learning and to equip attendees with the tools to apply these methods to their own scientific research questions.
The high demand speaks for itself: all 30 available spots were filled within a single day, with more than 60 additional applicants on the waiting list. Due to the strong interest, the DKRZ plans to offer the workshop once or twice a year going forward.
