The character of the land surface including the plant cover are important climate factors. The land biosphere is an important component of the global carbon cycle. Furthermore, the land cover has a large impact upon the regional water cycle: evaporation and precipitation. With land surface models, such interactions can be simulated and enable research into past and possible future consequences of human actions.
