Seagate Prepares 55 Petabyte File System for German Climatology Department

Torben Kling-Petersen from Seagate describes an upcoming deployment of a 55 Petabyte Lustre file system in Hamburg, Germany. The ClusterStor deployment will be the most energy-efficient file system of its kind in the world upon installation. Excerpt: " ... we have a 55 petabyte system that would be in a total of about–I think in the last math I did was about 23 racks, which is kind of in a class of its own, delivering more than half a terabyte per second throughput. So, 560-570 gigabytes per second ... that’s a fairly impressive step. So it will be not the fastest device at the moment on earth, it will be one of the largest ever developed, but more importantly, it will be the most energy efficient ever developed."

Bull Charges Ahead in Supercomputing Despite Big Data Refocus

In many ways, Bull has been a mirror, reflecting companies like Cray from across the Atlantic. One on the one hand, both companies have deep roots in supercomputing, with particularly strong continental bases. Conversely, the arrival of the big data phenomenon has marked a chance for both companies to wrench free from strict supercomputing affiliations and find a new path to deliver high-end, high performance systems to an entirely new and rapidly class of potential enterprise users—customers who might not consider what they do to be exactly “HPC” but who have serious computational and data-driven needs that vanilla servers or database approaches can’t tackle.
