3D Visualization with ParaView - Hands-on Workshop December 2019

ParaView is a freely available 3D visualization software that is available on the visualization nodes of Mistral. ParaView is exceptionally well suited for the visualization and analysis of regular rectilinear netCDF data sets, as well as for ICON and curvilinear MPIOM data.

Visualization Workshop

On Tuesday and Wednesday, December 3rd and 4th, the DKRZ hosts a visualization workshop dedicated to the 3D visualization software ParaView. ParaView is an open source visualization package that reads a variety of different data formats and lattices and implements the most common visualization techniques. In this two day workshop, we will introduce the basics as well as some of the more advanced features of ParaView. Below are some figures that were created using ParaView and ICON HD(CP)² data (fig.1), ICON ocean data (fig.2) and MPI-OM TP6M HAMOCC data (fig.3).

  • Basic Linux/Unix knowledge
  • Account on Mistral (If you don't have one: Let us know in advance!)
  • Own laptop with ssh and vncviewer installed


Workshop Overview:

  • Loading and working with rectilinear data, curvilinear MPI-OM data, ICON data
  • Data modification and selection (clipping, thresholds, slicing, calculator)
  • Basic and advanced scalar and vector visualization techniques (surface and volume rendering, streamlines, glyphs)
  • Data exploration and selection (scatterplots, parallel coordinates, histograms)
  • Linked and comparative views
  • Adding annotations and orography, creating animations and snapshots
  • Raytracing with OSPRay
  • Parallel visualization of extremely large data (Dyamond++)
