New Archival System at DKRZ: migration successful, release on Mon 1 Nov at 2 PM

Nov 01, 2021

Dear users,

we are pleased to inform you that the migration from HPSS to StrongLink was successful. On Mon 1st November at 2 PM the access from Mistral to the StrongLink system will be activated. Apologies for the delay.

The functionalities of StrongLink will be activated step by step. In the first step, users can archive data in the HSM system in order to relieve pressure from their disk quota.

Retrieving data from the tape archive and other functionalities (see below) will be activated later.

During start-up and stepwise activation of the functionalities, we will closely monitor the behaviour of the system and are also very happy about feedback should you notice something unusual.

In the following, we summarise key points related to the usage of the StrongLink system:

slk: the new command line interface to access the tape archive. First steps with slk are documented on our Getting Started page

The following add-on packages to the slk are also available on mistral:

slk helpers: The slk_helpers are an in-house development of DKRZ and are automatically loaded when you load the slk module:

Python and slk: we offer a set of simple Python wrapper functions for all slk and slk_helpers commands via the Python package pyslk. pyslk is available in the module “python3/unstable” on mistral. Doku:

Check exit codes and slk log: Make sure to always check for the exit code of the slk command and read the log in ~/.slk/slk-cli.log for details, if the exit code is different from 0.

slk retrieve, slk group and slk search are deactivated: At the moment the subcommands retrieve, group and search will be activated at a later stage.

slk login token: The slk login token is stored in ~/.slk/config.json. No other user should have read permission for this file. Please do not share it with anyone.

Even before the general release of the retrieval functionality, individual files can be read back from the system in urgent cases. If you are in such a situation, please contact DKRZ support.

We apologize again for any inconvenience caused by the delayed switchover to the new HSM system and thank you for your patience.
