New Archival System at DKRZ: new time schedule and further information

Jun 25, 2021

Update: 2021-07-09 20:38

Dear DKRZ users,

As we announced two weeks ago, the migration of the HSM system was planned for the CW29 -- starting with the HPSS going offline on 16 July. We are sorry to inform you that the migration has to be shifted by at least one week due to technical issues which arose during the final testing phase. Thus, the HPSS will go offline earliest on 30 July. We apologize for the short notice. We will keep you updated.

If you already want to try out a few things with the slk tool (the new command line interface which replaces pftp), you are welcome to do so. We have set up an HSM/StrongLink training system running on a virtual machine for this purpose. There is no tape system connected to the training system and users must not archive files larger than a few megabytes. A description for the first usage is provided here: https://doc.dkrz.de/doc/hsm/test_system.html

We have prepared several resources for you, which are updated continuously:

* FAQ: https://www.dkrz.de/s/hsm_faq
* Documentation: https://doc.dkrz.de/doc/hsm/index.html

Best Regards,
DKRZ

Dear users,

As we announced earlier this year, a new Hierarchical Storage Management (HSM) system is planned to be put in operation at DKRZ in 2021. In the past month, the StrongLink software, which is the core of the new HSM system, has been adapted and considerably extended to fulfill the needs at DKRZ. We expect that the migration from HPSS to the new HSM system will take place in the 29th calendar week. This schedule might be delayed on short notice if during the acceptance phase issues arise which were not identified during our current intensive testing procedure.

During the migration, the tape archive at DKRZ will not be accessible from Friday 16 July until approximately 26 July. We will hold a DKRZ TechTalk on 6 July to prepare you for the changeover and to make you familiar with the handling and features of the new HSM. We recommend participation in this TechTalk to all our users who have been using HPSS so far. There will be a more detailed announcement regarding the TechTalk next week.

If you already want to try out a few things with the slk tool (the new command line interface which replaces pftp), you are welcome to do so starting from 5 July onwards. We have set up an HSM/StrongLink training system running on a virtual machine for this purpose. There is no tape system connected to the training system and users must not archive files larger than a few megabytes. If you wish to try the slk tool on the training system, please contact [Email protection active, please enable JavaScript.] . We kindly ask all active testers to stay down with their testing activity next week (CW26) because we expect several updates to be installed and tested in this time period.

We have prepared several resources for you, which will undergo an update next week:

* FAQ: https://www.dkrz.de/s/hsm_faq

* Documentation: https://doc.dkrz.de/doc/hsm/index.html

* Mailinglist on slk updates for (one email approx. every two weeks): https://lists.dkrz.de/mailman/listinfo/slk-updates

Best regards,
DKRZ
