EGU 2015 "Visualization and Uncertainty in the Earth Sciences"

All areas in the Earth Sciences face the same problem of dealing with larger and larger data sets. In many instances the uncertainty in the data has to be displayed as well. Effective, yet also efficient techniques are required to analyze, visualize and finally understand the data and the information therein. Depending on the application domain and the specific scientific questions to be solved, different visualization strategies and techniques can be applied.

Visualization Sessions at EGU 2015

Similar to our last EGU commitments, we will host several sessions dedicated to the visualization of earth science data at EGU 2015. In this year, a special focus lies on the visualization of data along with its uncertainty. Furthermore we welcome and invite submissions that demonstrate how to create effective, efficient and intuitive visualizations for general earth science data sets. Submissions are encouraged from all geoscientific areas that either show new techniques, best practices or state of the art in earth science data visualization.

In order to group the submissions, we plan to offer three sessions dedicated to different aspects of visualization:

  • An oral/poster session, dedicated to uncertainty and the visualization of uncertain earth science data sets.
  • Another oral/poster session that focuses on techniques and tools for effective visualization and sonification.
  • A PICO session, presenting state of the art in earth science data visualization using an interactive PICO presentation.

These workshops and sessions are co-organized by the German Climate Computing Center (DKRZ), the University of Reading, the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, as well as through the University of Vienna.

 

 

Oral Session 1: "Visualization of (un)certainty"

Almost every simulation or measurement conducted is affected by uncertainty of different sources; or put in other words, the only certainty is the uncertainty in the data. Although there are a number of techniques available to visualize uncertainty, there is still a lot of "uncertainty" in how to handle this data, and how to integrate it as part of a good visualization. In many cases, the uncertainty of the data can be quantified to some extent, for instance through ensemble simulations, and then be used in the visualization to display the validity of the data.
This session is intended to bring together researchers and practitioners from the geo sciences interested in dealing with uncertainty in their data.

We invite submissions for best practices in handling and visualizing uncertain Earth sciences data; specifically we are highly interested in techniques and workflows that support to efficiently display data along with its (un)certainty.

 

Oral Session 2: "Techniques and tools for effective visualization and sonification in the geosciences"

Visualization is a key technique for helping scientists to extract information and meaning from complex data. Geoscience data presents particular challenges, being typically large, multivariate,
multidimensional, time-varying and uncertain. This session will present new tools, approaches and applications that help scientists to explore their data or to communicate complex results to a wider audience.


PICO Session: "State of the Art in Earth Science Data Visualization"

All areas in Earth Science face the same problem of dealing with larger and larger data sets that needs to be analyzed, visualized and understood. Depending on the application domain and the specific scientific questions to be solved, different visualization strategies and techniques have to be applied.

For this "PICO only" session, we invite submissions that demonstrate how to create effective visualizations for complex and large earth science data sets. Submissions are encouraged from all geoscientific areas that either show best practices or state of the art in earth science data visualization, or demonstrate efficient techniques that allow an intuitive interaction with large data sets.

Presentations will be given as PICO (Presenting Interactive COntent) on large interactive touch screens.

CMIP5_SeaLevelChange

Visualization of sea level change for the most optimistic and the most pessimistic scenario model. The data is part of the recent IPCC report, the simulation model is the MPI-ESM mixed resolution.

OceanCalciteSaturation

Visualization of oceanic calcite saturation changes, as impact from climate change. Areas in blue depict an undersaturation with CaCO3, and are problematic for many shell building sea creatures.
