NCL is a script-based 2D visualization software package developed by the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). It is specifically designed for scientific data analysis and visualization in the field of Earth system sciences.

NCL Visualization Workshop


The DKRZ organizes a 3-day hands-on training course on using NCL.

This is a beginner level workshop which is focused on the use of NCL for the visualization of 2D gridded model or observational data.

Workshop content:

  •  NCL language basics
  •  Use of different grid types (rectilinear, curvilinear, irregular)
  •  Visualization of scalar data (xy-, contour-, slice-, bar chart-plots)
  •  Visualization of vector data (vector arrows, streamlines)
  •  Plot layout (panels, overlays, annotations, maps)
  •  Creating animations

More advanced topics can be covered on the third workshop day, specifically help to visualize your own data.

Bring/Prerequisites:

  • Basic Linux/Unix and programming experiences knowledge are strictly required.
  • Own laptop with ssh and vncviewer installed.
  • or own laptop with NCL version 6.6 installed.

The workshop will mainly be given by Karin-Meier Fleischer and Michael Böttinger (DKRZ).
