Make sure your DKRZ password is unique

Aug 19, 2020

Dear users,

Your most sensitive password at DKRZ is the one you use to log into and other servers at DKRZ which share the same LDAP authentication infrastructure. This password can be changed here

Some software on mistral and other servers manage their own passwords or store passwords to log in on your behalf. One example of this is the .netrc file for passwordless (p)ftp (see There are others like VNC or SVN.

From a security perspective it is important to keep two things in mind:

  • Never share the same password for different services or software
  • Never let software store your password unless you are absolutely sure that the password is strongly encrypted and secured with a long passphrase and preferably additional factors. Dedicated password safes can deliver this level of security.

If you suspect that your password has been shared or stored in an insecure way, then you should change it immediately.

Best regards,
