Remote 3D Rendering

Remote 3D Rendering allows the operation of a computer, including the desktop, from large distances. Using this technology, the user input (mouse and keyboard) is transmitted to the remote computer, from which the desktop (X11) is compressed and streamed back to the user. The user thereby has the experience as if he is working directly on the remote system.

The huge advantage of remote 3D visualization is that all data stays in Mistrals' Lustre file system and does not need to be copied elsewhere. Additionally, the requirements on the client side are minimal, and only require a small computer with a good network connection. No local storage or high-performance graphics hardware is needed.

 Remote Rendering

At the DKRZ, we are using TurboVNC / VirtualGL for remote 3D rendering.
