The German Climate Computing Centre (DKRZ) is the central data processing facility for the German climate and Earth system modeling community and is one of the leading facilities in this area. DKRZ operates supercomputers of the highest performance class, modern high-performance clusters and graphics systems as well as one of the largest data and archive systems worldwide.

Student work: Archiving and post-processing of DYAMOND Winter data

In weather and climate modeling, global storm-resolving simulations (with horizontal resolutions < 5km) are the forefront of high-resolution modeling. The DYAMOND initiative (DYnamics of the Atmospheric general circulation Modeled On Non-hydrostatic Domains) sets up a framework for the intercomparison of such global storm-resolving models.

This initiative is now in its second phase, and DKRZ supports the initiative with several Petabytes of data storage on disks and tapes, and its parallel processing capabilities. We are looking for a student assistant to support the DYAMOND team at DKRZ and the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in processing and providing these data sets to the international science community.

Your job will involve handling of the already processed data sets as well as standardizing new data sets. For both tasks, scripts already exist, but will need to be extended for further automatization of these processes.

Job description

  • Archiving data in the tape system with existing scripts
  • Providing archived data sets on user request with existing scripts
  • Processing incoming data sets with existing scripts
  • Development of these scripts where necessary
  • Documentation of data sets and access methods

Qualification / Experiences

  • Fluent handling of UNIX/LINUX
  • Programming skills in bash and python
  • Experiences with the climate data operators (cdo) and batch systems on HPC would be helpful

The student assistant position is supposed to start as soon as possible with up to 80 working hours per month. A high proportion (up to 100%) of work from home is possible. The compensation for student assistants will be 13.95 €/h (with first professional university degree) or 12.00 €/h (without first professional university degree). Initially, the position is limited until 31 December 2022.
