The German Climate Computing Centre (DKRZ) is the central simulation and data processing facility for the German climate and Earth System modelling community and is one of the leading facilities in this area. DKRZ not only operates supercomputers in the highest performance class and one of the largest data and archive systems worldwide, we also participate in many national and international projects aiming to improve the software and infrastructure for climate modelling.

Software Engineer in the area of distributed climate data processing infrastructures (all genders).

We are looking for two

Software Engineers in the area of distributed climate data processing infrastructures

(all genders).

Your tasks

  • Collaborate with in-house scientists and European project partners to develop and implement new data management and processing components to be deployed in multiple European data centres.
  • Establish data catalogues to enable data re-use across a wide range of technologies.
  • Support national and international partners in their capacity as data providers and data users. This includes data refinement and processing.
  • Create high-quality documentations of all kinds. Organise inspiring training sessions, e.g. at conferences, hackathons or seminars.

Your profile

  • Master and / or PhD in (Geo-)Informatics, Computer-, Geo- or Environmental Sciences, Mathematics, Physics or a related STEM subject with strong relation to Scientific Computing and Programming.
  • Strong experience in analysing climate model data output, preferably using tools from the Python ecosystem for climate data analysis (Pangeo) and Machine Learning
  • Experience in object storage (S3) based data hosting and cloud-based data infrastructures is an advantage.
  • Experience in the development, implementation and operation of user-oriented services, ideally in the area of data catalogues.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English. German is a plus.
