The German Climate Computing Centre (DKRZ) is the central simulation and data processing facility for the German climate and Earth System modelling community and is one of the leading facilities in this area. DKRZ not only operates supercomputers in the highest performance class and one of the largest data and archive systems worldwide, we also participate in many national and international projects aiming to improve the software and infrastructure for climate modelling.

Currently, we are offering a position as

Software Engineer for Data Analysis on Cloud-based Storage Systems (all genders)

Your tasks

  • Combine climate data storage requirements and associated data workflows with their implementation in a cloud storage environment.
  • Develop optimal chunking and re-chunking strategies of big datasets of high-resolution climate model output for the analysis on cloud systems but also in the mix of DKRZ storage requirements (HPC file systems, tape, and cloud)
  • Improve the usability, efficiency and user experience of cloud-based data services in collaboration with the DKRZ team, DKRZ users and DKRZ technologies like JupyterHub and Freva.
  • Software engineering for these tasks using classical approaches and modern artificial intelligence for optimal data movement, chunking, and prediction of user requests with the support of the AI/ML team at DKRZ.
  • Contribute to the introduction and further development of cloud-based data services.

Must Have

  • Master in Informatics, Computer-, Geo- or Environmental Sciences, Mathematics, Physics or a related STEM subject with strong relation to Scientific Computing and Programming.
  • Experience with data analysis, hosting, monitoring and movement on cloud-based data technologies, infrastructures and software APIs
  • Solid experience in programming and software development, especially with Python Additional experience in any other programming language is a plus
  • Experience with version control software (preferably git) and unit testing frameworks.
  • Excellent English communication skills, German is a plus but not a must.

Nice to Have

  • Experiences search engines (Apache Solr), database system (MariaDB), HPC systems, distributed system technologies (dask, docker, binder, kubernetes) or similar software.
  • Experience in building and leverage in RestFull APIs.
  • Background knowledge in the field of scientific data storage and management
