Research Software Developer (all genders) in High Performance Computing

Your tasks

ICON is an earth-system model consisting of different sub-modules for the atmosphere, ocean and land, which have been developed around common data-structures and technical infrastructure. Its development started more than 20 years ago and it is mostly written in Fortran in a monolithic fashion. To enable the project goals of WarmWorld it is necessary to transform the ICON code base into an open, scalable, modularised and flexible code and to enable portable performance improvements. As a Research Software Developer in WarmWorld you will contribute to this code transformation by applying modern software engineering concepts to e.g., provide better support for GPU devices, or design interfaces to allow for the interoperability of components written in different programming languages.

Qualifications / Experiences

  • An academic degree in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Computational Physics or Engineering or related fields with strong relation to scientific computing
  • Experience and a strong interest in different areas of High Performance Computing, such as
    • MPI/OpenMP parallelisation
    • Programming scientific codes for heterogenous HPC architectures
    • OpenACC/OpenMP GPU offloading
  • Knowledge in programming and modern software engineering based on C/C++ and/or Fortran
    • Fluent handling of scripting languages like Bash and Python
    • Experience in complex software development and software version control systems (e.g. Git)
  • Knowledge in the application of computational fluid dynamics or weather and climate modelling is an asset
  • English is often our working language, so good knowledge is an advantage

Your start at DKRZ can be arranged individually, but is possible immediately. The position is initially for four years with an option to extend if the project receives further funding.
