The German Climate Computing Centre (DKRZ) is the central simulation and data processing facility for the German climate and Earth System modelling community and is one of the leading facilities in this area. Research Associates and Scientific Programmers

Within the framework of various projects, DKRZ is looking for 3 Research Associates and Scientific Programmers in the area of high-performance data infrastructures

The successful applicants will be part of a team of research scientists and software engineers contributing to the development of a data infrastructure to manage climate model output data and utilizing it in ambitious research projects like WarmWorld Easier and EERIE.

Your tasks

  • Explore, adapt and implement existing and new infrastructure components at DKRZ, ideally expanding to other sites in Germany and Europe.
  • Integrate heterogeneous storage tiers like tape archive, cloud storage and parallel file systems into the infrastructure while ensuring optimized and efficient data flow.
  • Establish data catalogs to enable data re-use with a wide range of technologies.
  • Support national and international partners, consisting of data producers, other data providers and data users. This includes data refinement and processing.
  • Create high-quality documentations of various kinds. Organize inspiring training sessions, e.g. at conferences, hackathons or seminars.

Your profile

  • Degree (MSc) in computer science or Earth system sciences.
  • Strong programming skills, preferably Python, C or C++.
  • Experience with scientific metadata catalogs.
  • Knowledge of the analysis and evaluation of climate variables and diagnostics is a plus.
  • Besides strong communication skills we expect capacity for teamwork in an interdisciplinary environment, the willingness to travel nationally and internationally, and fluent English language skills. German language skills are a plus.
