The German Climate Computing Centre (DKRZ) is the central simulation and data processing facility for the German climate and Earth System modelling community and is one of the leading facilities in this area. DKRZ not only operates supercomputers in the highest performance class and one of the largest data and archive systems worldwide, we also participate in many national and international projects aiming to improve the software and infrastructure for climate modelling.

Currently, we are offering a position as

Member (w/m/d) of the HPC-Support team

One of DKRZ's central tasks is to receive and resolve user enquiries about the high-performance computing resources and services it operates, and thus to play an active role in improving climate model runs. At the same time, the services offered in the area of software development are constantly being further developed and adapted to the needs of the users.

Your tasks

Together with the colleagues, you will support users with enquiries and problems in the use of DKRZ resources. Contact is made via a ticket system, by telephone or in person. In dialogue with the requesting scientists, you obtain all the information required for the solution, analyse problems and error messages and solve them in a team with other HPC specialists and system administrators. The knowledge and experience gained is then incorporated into the documentation for all users.

In addition to direct user support, there is the opportunity to become more deeply involved with the users in their code development and adaptation to the resources of DKRZ. In addition to classical code optimisation, this can include support for porting to new HPC hardware or data handling workflows.

Your profile

  • Enjoy supporting scientists in dealing with HPC systems - using your knowledge in parallel programming (like MPI, OpenMP, OpenACC)
  • Ability to comprehend and classify enquiries and problems - good programming skills, preferably in Fortran, C/C++ and/or Python, may be utilised
  • Confident handling of Linux operating systems and scripting tools
  • Very good communication skills and knowledge of German and English
  • Successfully completed university of applied sciences or bachelor's degree related to computer science, completed training as an IT specialist or a comparable qualification; ideally first experience in scientific computing on HPC systems

Our offer

We offer you the opportunity to work on and solve your tasks in the team of the scientific environment at DKRZ. You will also have the time to delve into the complex issues of climate simulations on high-performance computers and to develop new approaches together. Similarly, specialist conferences and workshops open up continuous further training both in the field of high-performance computing and in climate science.

We are based in Hamburg, but we want to create a suitable working environment by offering flexible working hours and location (up to 100% work at home possible). The advertised position can be filled on a full-time or part-time basis. Remuneration will be according to the applicant's qualifications in accordance with TVöD-Bund up to remuneration group E13. You are welcome to start at the beginning of 2023, but the exact start date can be agreed individually. The position is initially limited to 2 years.
