Data Scientist / AI Consultant (all genders)

For the AI Consultant team we are hiring for a position that will start as soon as possible (specific dates can be discussed individually).

The Helmholtz Association initiated the Helmholtz Artificial Intelligence platform ( This future-oriented network for applied Artificial Intelligence develops, implements and disseminates methods of Artificial Intelligence for purposes including the analysis of complex systems in multiple research fields. The Helmholtz AI local unit AIM (Artificial Intelligence Innovation for Earth System Analytics and Modelling) provides application-oriented AI capabilities for the field of Earth System and climate science, with a specific focus on Machine Learning (ML) methods. AIM consists of scientific partners, including a research group at Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon and a support team of AI Consultants at DKRZ. The AI Consultants work on request by scientific users from a wide range of Helmholtz centres, lowering the barrier for adoption of ML techniques into the mainstream of Earth and environmental research. The team members implement scientific ML applications, provide methodological guidance and conduct trainings.

Your responsibilities

  • You will contribute to the success of AIM by providing services and consultation to scientific users as part of the multi-disciplinary team.
  • You will implement ML applications collaboratively with users and other team members to address scientific cases at the intersection of ML and geosciences.
  • You will convey key expertise in data science techniques to the team and the users, and help to overcome practical barriers.

Your profile 

    • MSc or PhD in geosciences, mathematics, computer sciences or equivalent scientific background.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and willingness to share data science expertise and collaborate with scientific users in a service-oriented manner.
    • Proven experience in developing data science workflows for time series data, gridded Earth observation products or environmental model output.
    • Prior experience in developing machine learning applications with big data using Python frameworks such as scikit-learn, PyTorch or Tensorflow, and data frameworks such as numpy or pandas, is an advantage.
    • Prior experience with teaching to a scientific audience is desired.
    • Prior experience with Linux-based High-Performance Computing (HPC) environments and applications may be beneficial.
    • Fluency in English (spoken and written).

The advertised position can be filled on a full-time or part-time basis. Remuneration will be according to the applicant's qualifications in accordance with TVöD-Bund up to remuneration group E13.

    The contract is initially limited until December 31, 2024 with possibility to extend, depending on review and confirmation of continued funding.
