Software Engineer (all genders) – Full Stack Development of a Data Analysis and Search Platform

With its new system coming up in autumn this year the German Climate Computing Centre will be amongst the top 10% of the TOP500 most powerful supercomputing centres.

The Climate Informatics and Technologies Group within the German Climate Computing Centre is looking for a Software Engineer to work on software solutions for a Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation project funded by the German Ministry for Education and Research. This work aims at supporting high resolution climate model developers as well as connecting various climate change related projects across different German municipalities by providing a common data analysis and search platform. What You’ll do:
  • Full stack development of web based user interface (ReactJS), search engine (Apache Solr), database system (MariaDB, django) and python based client interface. More information on our data analysis and search  platform is available at https://www-regiklim.dkrz.de.
  • Supporting researchers in developing and applying their data analysis plugins as well as developing solutions to search for various types of data across different storage locations via a common data search engine.
  • Coordinate requirements with diverse project partners from across Germany, ranging from Climate Modellers, Hydrologists to City Planners and Civic Engineers.
  • You will be working on planning and implementation of real-time client / server systems at one of Germany’s top tier High High Performance Computing Systems.
  • You’ll also be working with various distributed system technologies like dask, docker, binder, kubernetes on virtual machines and the HPC system alike.

What You’ll bring in:
  • You have a master level degree in computer science, natural science or a comparable education with focus on information technology.
  • Interests in the field of climate science.
  • You have solid experience in programming with python. Additional experience in any other programming language is a plus.
  • You know version control concepts and software.
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills. German is a plus
  • Any experience in web frontend development is a plus, but not a must have.

The contract is initially limited until April 2023. Pending approval of project phase 2 by the German Ministry, the contract can be subject to an extension for an additional three years until April 2026. Payment will be in accordance with the German public service positions (TVöD-B according to the applicant’s qualification), including extensive social security plans. The conditions of employment follow those of the German civil service.
