Subject to funding approval by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, we offer in the national ESM support team a position as

Process Coordination (all genders)

High-performance computing (HPC) is the workhorse for Earth system modelling (ESM), providing new insights into Earth system processes to better understand global change and assess adaptation scenarios. Earth system models tend to become more accurate and trustworthy in the process, but the enormous changes in the HPC landscape in recent years have further complicated code adaptations and made them an ongoing task. These challenges posed by new heterogeneous HPC systems and the need for code refactoring are to be addressed jointly as part of a national ESM strategy.

While the scientific development of the ESM components has to be tackled in the home institutions, the technical challenges around HPC and software development can be addressed jointly. To this end, a national ESM support team will be formed. This team will help to efficiently apply resources, mobilise synergies, share insights and disseminate knowledge. Key points here are: direct HPC support for the ESM community; building expertise in HPC, workflows, modularisation and coupling of components; scalable diagnostics for ESM codes; training programs for the ESM community; and advancing the national ESM strategy.

Job description

The Process Coordinator will take on the task of overall management of the national ESM strategy process, including interaction with the steering group, the governance working group on implementation of an effective decision-making structure as well as other necessary sub-working-groups. Annual Workshops with the whole ESM Community have to be conceptualized and evaluated. The Process Coordinator manages the requests for support and the consulting or programming sprints. Finally, the unifying elements of each inquiry will be identified together with the scientific partners, resulting in necessary steps of a collaborative strategy. The scientific and technical analysis is complemented by exchanges with similar approaches in Europe, the USA and Japan.

Qualifications / Experiences

  • A PhD in Meteorology, Oceanography, Hydrology, Physics, Applied Mathematics or related fields with strong relation to Earth system science
  • Very good knowledge in Earth system processes and their representation in models
  • Deep understanding of the fundamentals of programming for HPC systems and software design
  • Ability to coordinate cross-institutional research and reporting tasks
  • Excellent communication skills and command of English and preferably German

Employment conditions

As a member of the national ESM support team, you will have the opportunity to work in a flexible academic environment, follow your own initiative, build strong collaborations within the German Earth system modelling community, and establish extensive collaborations with HPC centres.
The German Climate Computing Centre (DKRZ) is the central simulation and data processing facility for the German climate and Earth system modelling and is one of the leading facilities in this area. The new national ESM support team will be closely integrated into the existing HPC support structures and can thus benefit directly from existing knowledge and experience. Since the Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) will also be joining the support team with two additional positions, there will also be access to the most powerful supercomputer in Europe.
For all positions we expect good to excellent English skills, as this is our working language. Due to the intended concept of changing support tasks, the ability to work in a team in an interdisciplinary environment and willingness to travel is a must-have.
Hamburg is envisaged as the place of work for the coordination, with a high proportion (up to 100%) of work from home possible. The coordination (full time) position is supposed to start as soon as possible and the position is initially limited to 36 months.
Payment will be in accordance with the German public service positions (TVöD E14 according to the applicant’s qualifications), including extensive social security plans. The conditions of employment follow those of the German civil service.
DKRZ strives for gender and diversity equality. We welcome applications from all backgrounds. Handicapped persons with comparable qualifications receive preferential status.
