ESMO IPO Scientific Officer
Context
The World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) and the German Climate Computing Center (DKRZ) invite applications for a Scientific Officer position in the Earth System Modelling and Observations International Project Office (ESMO IPO).
About the ESMO IPO
The ESMO IPO has been recently setup at DKRZ to coordinate the modelling, data assimilation and observational activities within the new WCRP core project ESMO, and to seek synergies with other WCRP activities and external partners in order to effectively tackle the ESMO scientific objectives towards the provision of science-based climate information. Key responsibilities of the ESMO IPO are to provide overall support to planning and implementation of the ESMO scientific activities and, importantly, to ensure coordination and communication within ESMO and with the other WCRP core projects, Lighthouse Activities, and other international programmes. Strengthening the link between climate observations and modelling communities will be a key activity.
Your role
To facilitate these ambitions, the ESMO IPO is looking to recruit an experienced and enthusiastic Scientific Officer with a background in Earth System modelling and/or observations. You will report to the ESMO IPO Director, under the governance of the ESMO Scientific Steering Group.
This is an exciting opportunity to join the IPO team, working in a dynamic and international environment supporting the brand-new and ambitious WCRP ESMO core project, enabling advances and progress in the exciting field of climate science, to deliver adequate climate information and support decision-making.
Key tasks and responsibilities
- Provide scientific and administrative support to the ESMO core project (including the IPO, ESMO SSG and ESMO Working Groups)
- Responsible for supporting coordination, planning, development, and implementation of the ESMO activities
- Facilitate international coordination and communication with related WCRP and other international programmes
- Lead on facilitating active liaisons between the climate observations (both in-situ and satellite) and modelling communities
- Responsible for adapting relevant governance structures and processes of ESMO bodies
- Attend and contribute to ESMO international meetings & events
- Organise, coordinate and facilitate online/in-person meetings, workshops, conferences, training sessions and other activities relevant to ESMO
- Oversee the preparation of reports, publications and communication materials
- Assist in the scientific communication, dissemination, and outreach
Required skills, experience and qualifications
- PhD in Climate Science or relevant scientific area; or equivalent experience
- At least 3 years of relevant work experience, some of it in an international environment
- Excellent organisational, interpersonal and communication skills, ideally in a multiple stakeholders environment setting
- Provision of support for working groups including setting up of meetings across time zones, writing of meeting notes, setting up meeting agendas
- Event design and facilitation, in person and online
- Ability to communicate with multiple audiences
- Adept at working remotely within geographically disparate teams, with a good awareness of cultural diversity
- Ability to work proactively and independently while enjoying being part of a team
- Ability to travel nationally and internationally multiple times per year
- Proficiency in English
Desired skills and experience
- Experience of project management in a scientific environment
- Experience working with climate data, with large databases, or with advanced data science tools and software
- Experience working with teams of climate scientists
- Experience in facilitating meetings and discussions
- Familiarity with governance processes and procedures
Employment conditions
- Full-time position available immediately, located in Hamburg (Germany)
- Payment according up to group TVöD 13 Bund
- Contract period until April 2026; a 3-year extension is possible subject to funding
