The Data Management Department of the German Climate Computing Centre is looking for a

Computer Scientist or IT-savvy Geoscientist (all genders)

to build a container-based infrastructure to analyse oceanographical research data in the BMBF funded M-VRE project (remains subject to funding). The position will start in July 2021 and will be initially limited until June 30, 2024.

What the project is about:

The position is part of the M-VRE, The MOSAiC Virtual Research Environment (https://mosaic-vre.org/) project, realized by DKRZ together with Alfred-Wegener-Institut (AWI) Bremerhaven and Deutsches Luft- und Raumfahrtzentrum (DLR) Jena, starting in summer 2021. The project aims to build a virtual research environment (VRE) for the analysis of oceanographic and meteorological measurement data collected during the MOSAiC polar expedition. The research environment will feature several different data analysis tools, deployed as containers on an orchestrated platform, and provide access to large research data sets hosted at various sites.

What you will do:

DKRZ’s role in this project is mainly to develop the container environment and to realize efficient remote data access. Together with colleagues, you will set up a test infrastructure for deploying containers, gradually move it to operational state, and work together with developers of the applications to assist them in integrating their applications. You will ensure that the data needed by the applications can be accessed by the applications in an efficient way. Other tasks are the creation and implementation of data management plans and the creation of a pool of climate simulation data for VRE users.

Your qualifications:

  • An understanding and basic practical experience with software containers is required (e.g. being able to run containers on Linux machines and to containerize simple applications). Some experience with container orchestration frameworks (e.g. Swarm, Rancher, Kubernetes) would be an excellent plus.
  • You should be familiar with Linux and command-line environments, including basic knowledge in scripting, ideally Python.
  • Ideally, you have some experience with server administration or a strong interest and willingness to learn this.
  • You should have a Master´s degree in computer science or geoscience. An interest in ocean/climate science and the work of ocean/climate scientists would be a plus.

Your personal skills:

  • The ability and willingness to familiarize yourself with new topics and technologies by yourself is extremely important.
  • Being fluent in English (written and spoken) is mandatory. Being fluent in German would be a big plus.
  • You must be willing and able to travel inside Germany (e.g. to project partners) as well as internationally (e.g. to conferences or workshops).
